Wrestling shoes are highly recommended. No street shoes/sneakers are allowed on the mats, so your child will wrestle in socks if they don't have wrestling shoes (club usually has some used shoes, but not many).
Gym shorts or sweat pants and a tee shirt are required practice gear. No buckles, zippers, etc.
Head gear is optional, although highly recommended.
Club has singlets (uniforms) for matches.
LWC focuses on matches as an extension of practice. This year we will be pairing all kids up at the beginning of the session, thus tardiness may eliminate the wrestlers’ matches. We match kids based on age/weight and try to match kids with similar skill levels, when possible. Of course, the number of wrestlers in or near the age/weight of your child enables such match-ups to be easier/more difficult. Again, the main objective is to have your child realize what a great sport wrestling is and have the desire to continue.
A wrestling match consists of two competitors of near age and weight attempting to take each other to the ground and pin their opponents shoulders to the mat. In the event that this doesn't occur in the given time frame, then points are kept to determine the winner. A referee is on the mat. The responsibility of the referee is to start and stop the match, award points, determine a pin, and to keep the wrestlers safe. The referee will wear two arm bands, red and green. They will hold up fingers indicating points scored by the wrestler wearing the corresponding ankle band.
Take down 2 points
Reverse 2 points
Escape 1 point
Exposing the back 2 points
Near fall (5 seconds) 3 points
Pin End of match
Technical fall (>15-point lead in match) End of match
A match is 3 periods long. In our league, each period is one minute long. Wrestlers start on their feet for the first period. After the first period the referee will give one of the wrestlers the choice of where to start the 2nd period. They can choose to be on their feet, in the bottom (defensive) position, or the top (offensive) position. The other wrestler gets choice on where to begin the 3rd period.
We, as a club, will have the responsibility of working as scorekeepers and timekeepers one of the Sundays we compete. We may also be asked to handle the concession stand. You are always welcome to help the tables on any of the Sundays.
